Home School Resources
for Children with Special Needs

This is a collection of home school resources for special needs children that I found helpful.

I have included websites, publishers and books. For the most part, I list books and sites I have read myself and found useful.

My son has co-morbid conditions related to Aspergers Syndrome, including phobias, sensory integration dysfunction, AD/HD, and Anxiety Disorders; thus, you will find some of those books listed.

In 2006, I also ordered and stocked books about special needs to start a parent/teacher resource shelf in my son's public school library. At that time, I was able to review and read several dozen catalogs and books.

In this book a mother shares her experiences raising a son with autism. She is a descriptive writer and I get the sense I am right with her when I am reading. This is a shorter book and interesting. A Will of His Own: Reflections on Parenting a Child With Autism by Kelly Harland

I read this book and loved it from start to finish. It is a true story by John Elder Robison about his life growing up with Asperger's Syndrome. An interesting read for any adult. look me in the eye

This looks good, I have not read it, myself: Life Skills Activities for Secondary Students with Special Needs

Two thin books which are good for references, both around 100 pages, but filled with information. I used the ideas in some of my teaching modification lists. The Other Half of Asperger Syndrome by Maxine Aston
Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities by Marieke Molenaar-Klumper

My husband picked this one up and I really enjoyed it. An interesting twist on your average autism book, by Kamran Nazeer Send In The Idiots: Stories from the Other Side of Autism

Another book -- this one has a few coffee cup stains on the cover, as I used it so much when first schooling Andrew. I based a lot of my modification ideas from this book by Kathryn Stewart, Ph.D. Helping a Child with Nonverbal Learning Disorder or Asperger's Syndrome

This is on my to read soon list. Finding God in Autism: A Forty Day Devotional for Parents of Autistic Children

I found the techniques in this book helpful. Most of the information I had heard before in other books, but I would suggest this book as an excellent starting or review resource. It is easy to read and well formatted. There are samples of chore charts and a list of behavioral techniques. The AD/HD Parenting Handbook, by Louis Cady, M.D.

This is a true story and good look at a girl growing up with Aspergers. Pretending to be Normal: Living with Asperger’s Syndrome,by Liane Holliday Willey

Written by an educator in the field of special education, this book gives a thorough description of different learning disabilities and how children are often fall behind in the traditional public school setting. Included in the book is a chapter on choosing to homeschool a child with LD (Learning Disabilities)and/or ADHD. I found the homeschooling section particularly positive and reaffirming. Pick up this book, if you suspect your child has a learning disability.

This is one mother's journey with her son with Asperger's Syndrome. She writes with a great sense of humor and easy to understand manner. She provides resources and a detailed look at the invents in her son's life. She has great visuals. This is a quality book with a lot of information. The author offers an extensive biography. There are sections on mercury and gluten, and much more. I am rereading this one. A fantastic starting point if you are considering biomedical intervention. I read this in two days. I couldn't put it down. The author writes with a fantastic voice and humor. The book is about the mothers who are trying to improve the health of their children. I found myself crying several times. I think everyone should read this book to gain empathy about what families go through in their fight to save their children. Ms. McCarthy is one tough lady. More Foundations and Support Websites:

This is a support group I founded several years ago in Northern California, called S.E.A.M.S. -- Support, Education, Advocacy, for Mothers(& fathers) with children with Special needs.

I listed most of the links when I first started the support group, but some more have been added.

I am no longer a part of the website but maintain a friendship with the board members.(2009) If you live in Northern California there are a lot of useful links here for raising children with special needs.

"NACD provides unique services to homeschoolers. With a long tradition in the active support of homeschooling, NACD helps parents make their homeschooling efficient, effective and enjoyable. As a national organization NACD is familiar with the laws in each state. Parents are supported in meeting state requirements, but that is not all that they are given. NACD will design a specific plan for each child. The instruction plan includes not only suggested materials but also how to teach them and even at what speed to teach them." -- quote from NACD site
