Homeschool Information about Family Health
The topic of homeschool and health has been on my mind for quite some time now, as I wanted to make sure to include some information about health in regards to family and the home in this website. If I had the energy, time and intention, I could build an entire website on home-health alone. Instead, at Spectrum Homeschool, I have dedicated several pages of examples of what I do in my attempts to maintain a better state of health for myself and my loved ones. I do not claim any cures or encourage anyone to do exactly what I do for my health; however, I do hope families can gain some insights and be inspired to adjust their lifestyle in ways that best affect their family's health. Sadly, too many children and adults are living in toxic home environments. I think it is particularly important to explore alternatives for providing a healthier home and lifestyle in the arena of homeschooling, because, more than likely, families that teach at home are spending a lot of time in and about their house; after all, we are homeschooling. Home is where the heart is--a place we turn to for positive role models, relationships, physical and spiritual nourishment, and support. Unfortunately, home is where we often encounter cleaning agents, bug repellents, furniture, flooring, and unsafe personal products(shampoos, soaps, makeup, etc.). So very much happens in our home, but in all of the homeschooling books I have read, and in all of the websites I have reviewed, nowhere, not once, is the health of the home mentioned; which to me, seems so very ironic, considering, our classroom is the home. One of the great benefits of teaching at home is you have the power to control your home environment. You may not be able to control the weather, but you can affect the toxins you allow into your home and body. Unlike the traditional schools, where we find insecticides, permanent marker fumes, an overabundance of plastics, carpeting, and sometimes mold, harmful cleaning agents, and poor-nutritional lunches, our homes can be a haven of health. Taking measures to positively affect the health of your home environment and family members can bring only good. And you will be helping your child to develop lifelong habits. You will have more energy, more ability to focus, allergies can sometimes be eliminated, and physical and mental conditions often improved. Take it from me, a woman "diagnosed" over the years with more conditions, syndromes, ailments, and disorders than I care to mention--if I can raise three boys, write articles, homeschool, and function in general, even manage to clean the house, without the use of any painkillers or drugs of any sort, (not even coffee!) and get a good night's sleep, by adjusting what is in my home environment and monitoring my food/supplement intake, than so can many other people. Living a healthy lifestyle is not easy in today's world. There is a lot of work involved in paving a home of health. It is not easy. Also, I am not an expert in nutrition, health, or other medical fields, so I won't be able to provide the in-depth details and terminology of a health professional, but neither will I preach high upon a soapbox about what you "should" do. I am no saint when it comes to health. I "cheat." I would go loony in this society, if I didn't partake in some old habits or eat like most Americans every now and then. What I have found helpful is incorporating the 20%/80% rule--I try to be healthy in my choices 80% of the time, and allow myself to be "human" the other 20%. When I do change something in regards to my health, let's say eat gluten or sugar, I notice a huge difference right away. I pay the consequences. Still, I allow myself the occasional treat. In the upcoming months, I will share with you the specifics of what I do. My experience is based on years of my own personal readings, research, and trial and error. Here are the articles I hope to bring to you in the near future, along with suggested readings and websites. Check back in for updates. And, please, if you find something helpful, share this news with others. We are the only ones that can make this place a better world for the children.

Update January 2010: I have been super busy studying for my Masters in Education, so I haven't been able to update this site in a bit. Please contact me anytime. Hope to add some more information soon. Blessings.

This page of my website is dedicated to my dear friend, Jodie, who is one of the bravest women I know, and to my sweet sister-in-law, Tammi, who is beginning the journey to a healthier home. The love I have for them will give me the strength and motivation to complete these articles.
