Home School Support Groups

When considering home school support groups review your personal reasons and needs for seeking support. There are hundreds of yahoo! and state homeschooling groups. (Links listed below.)

You can choose to join an online group, forum, and/or a group that meets close to home at a physical location.

With so many support systems available, I suggest trying out a few different groups to see which one is a "good fit" for you and your child(ren).

Remember do not offer up too much information about yourself, your location, and personal history, if you join an online group.

Be cautious of groups that are mainly networking their own products or websites, unless you are looking for a networking site yourself.

Consider looking for support group postings, asking about local support groups, or posting an add at: natural food stores, religious book stores, charter schools, libraries, and churches.

You can also start your own support group online or by posting a classified in your local paper.

To narrow down your search keep the following ideas in mind:

What are your primary support needs? (curriculum development, field trips, teaching ideas, getting started, friendship, socialization, networking)

Do you want the members to share your same teaching philosophies or teaching method?

Are you searching for a group with the same religious denomination?

Is location and convenience important to you?

Do you have time, medical, physical or other types of restrictions?

Would you like a group that understands your particular needs? (single-parent, parent of a child with disability, remote location, new to homeschooling)

How much time can you commit to the group? Do members contribute on a regular basis?

What are the age-levels of the children? Do the children share the same morals and values as your family?

Is the group open to children with special needs?

When was the group established? Who was the founder? Why was the group founded? Is the group tied to a publisher, blogger, website, or magazine?

How many members belong to the group?
