Home School Spelling Activities

1. Mom: Here are some musical spelling games. Avoid the advertisements on either side of the menu. Click on a link and the music player, and then practice the song. This activity will not take long, but it is a fun way to introduce the spelling rules.

Andy: This music is sometimes hard to follow. Not very fun. But I like it because it is more fun to sing than to learn the rules other ways.

Musical Spelling Rules

2. Mom: This is a great spelling review web page. The lessons do not apply to grade level. Level one is suitable for a high-second grade reader, and level five is for upper elementary grades.

Andy: The lists in the beginning levels are good. The higher level words (where you have to fill in the blank) are not as fun.

Spelling Words Review

3. Mom: This is an easy ABC order game. Great for first and second graders.

Andy: Good for younger kids.

An early elementary ABC order game

4. Mom: A very basic elementary game where you fill in the letters; for example, b__ __ t (child fills in the letter choices of "ao" for boat. A nice review for second - fourth grade.

Andy: Good for first and second grade. Too easy for me.

Word Fill

5. Mom: Spelling review game where you drop a line and fish for words, suitable for children in second - fourth grade. Good review of basics. Press the small "play". Click through the rules. Click on the rod once, and then again.

Andy: It was o.k.

7. Mom: Spin and Spell is an activity for basic spelling. It is based on the Spin and Spell pull string games from years ago. This is a fun game broken into themes. A child might need a parent's help in spelling.

Andy: I liked the spinning wheel part and the choice of animals.

Spin and Spell

8. Moms: I have fun with this one. Race the monster and see how many words you can make. Press the "clear" button, if you make a mistake. This is addicting. Sometimes the letters mess up for some reason, but still a blast.

Andy: It's one of the best ones!

Beat the Monster

9. Great for beginning spellers. Choose from a theme, like barnyard, and match the words/sounds to pictures.

Scholastic Spelling Theme Games

10. Mom: I like the simplicity of this page. It is easy to play and challenging. You are matching scrabble-like, letter combination tiles to form new words. This is good for any age, even fun for adults. Must be a reader and know how to read blends.

Andy:

Magnetic Spelling Game

11. Mom: I like this one. A child types in ten words, checks the spelling, and can play an online game or print out a scramble or word search page. We used this with Andy's spelling words; it was great!

Scholastic is a good site in general for finding books for children.

Andy: I like unscrambling the words.

Scholastic Scramble and Word Search

12. Mom: 35 lists for each grade. Grades 1-6. Fun activities for each grade. I like this site. Good resource brought to you by a well known educational publisher, Hartcourt Brace.

13. Mom: This is from a well known educational publisher, Houghtin Mifflin. This is a sampling of their spelling words made into fun games for grades 1-8. I like this game also.

15. Mom: This is a fun one for young and old alike. Based on the MadLibs I did as a child. Great for teaching grammar.

Andy:

Eduplace MadLibs

16. Mom: This is a fun one for adults too. Not for young children. You can pick different categories like anatomy and emotions; then solve the hangman puzzle. Suitable for third grade and up.

Michael (age 11): I like it. It's challenging.

17. Mom: Power Proofreading is for grades 2-8. You choose a story theme and then have to find the grammatical errors.

2. Mom: This is another one for Mom or Dad to consider for a online spelling program.

Online Spelling Program

3. Mom: Some tools to assist children. A spelling list and a four page list of spelling rules.

A 4 page worksheet to print out of spelling rules

4. Mom: I found "Miss Spellings' Spelling Center" a bit busy and hard to look at. I think there are some great resources on the pages, though. Also, there are some activities for children, but there are a lot of instructions listed first. Best for a parent to skim through and see if there is anything for the child to play.

5. Mom: This is a site with many more language arts games for parent review.

More Language Arts Games

6. Mom: Go to this site to review basic spelling and grammar rules, e.g. prefixes and root words. A lot of choices. Best for a parent to focus on one rule for the child to review.

7. Mom: There are three fun activities here, but they require some set up and explanation on the parent's part. Worth your time.
