Home School Curriculum

There are many choices in home school curriculum. The word curriculum itself means an educational plan or an area of study with a series of independent courses.

Many people commonly use curriculum as a synonym for textbooks or materials, but that is not the true meaning of the word. For our purpose, when we look at the materials listed, remember none of the products are all-encompassing, and the most effective curriculum provides many different materials and books.

You might want to order a single item, like a textbook, workbook, book, or other material, from different distributors, to see what works best for you. Also, attending a home school conference, educational teachers' store, or another homeschooling family's house, where you can pick up and touch the educational materials, is helpful in making a decision.

I strongly suggest reviewing the

Teaching Methods First.

This is by no means a complete list of curricula, nor will it ever be, but I will continue to add more home school resources monthly. If you are feeling overwhelmed, I would close this page, and come back another day. You don't have to choose any materials right away. Happy searching.

Robinson Curriculum

Harcourt A common math supplier used in the public schools. Reputable company. I have used their product for the primary grades before.

I like Saxon Math. This is a popular choice with home schoolers. The math is taught in a cyclic manner, with a new skill introduced with each lesson. It is easy for the parent and teacher to go back and reference prior lessons. We use this in our home school program. I only have the textbook. At the fourth grade level and lower, you don't need the answer book; we also don't have the tests or review papers. The book in itself is a wealth of information.
Saxon Math

McGraw-Hill Social Studies: This is commonly used in public schools. It is a quality company with traditional materials. Please be aware that, in general, most history textbooks from all publishers have inaccurate or incomplete historical facts.

Handwriting Without Tears: Printing and cursive handwriting: This is an excellent product, commonly used by primary grades and occupational therapists for children with special needs. The program uses manipulatives to build letters. You can also just buy the workbook. I used this product with my kindergartner and my third grader with special needs.

Family Math: I used this math book in the primary grades. It is a fun, concrete approach to math. Makes a good addition to other math curriculum.

Singapore Math: I have seen this recommended on support group sites, but have not used the materials myself.

Math-U-See: Very popular with primary grade teachers. A hands-on approach to learning. Involves using manipulatives, such as connecting cubes. Worth a look. I used this program when I taught first grade along with other materials.
